Captain Kirk and his crew encounter an ancient, pre-warp sleeper ship called the <I>S.S. Botany Bay</I> adrift in space. Inside, they find several bodies in held in a state of suspended animation, which are then brought on board the <I>Enterprise</I>. Among their number is Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically-engineered tyrant who was one of the great leaders involved in the Eugenics War of Earth during the 1990s; Kahn mysteriously disappeared shortly after his defeat, and was never brought to justice for his crimes. After Khan and his followers are revived from stasis, Kirk quickly realises that the charismatic leader still has all the ambition, strength and intelligence which helped him to conquer a quarter of the Earth. However, the ship’s beautiful historian, Lieutenant Marla McGivers, soon becomes beguiled by Kahn’s charms, and she helps him and his supporters to seize control of the <I>Enterprise</I>’s engine room. Kahn then orders Kirk to hand over command of his vessel…
